Portraits in Oil: Winter 2019

One great takeaway from Ismael Checo's class at the Rye Art Center is to exaggerate color beyond what you see. Here are a few recent portraits.

Side note:  One model was particularly dour. I've dubbed her portraits, 'Sourpuss 1" and 'Sourpuss 2'.

Painting Short Poses: Winter 2019

This winter, I schlepped up to the Silvermine Art Center in New Canaan, to take Dean Fisher's painting class. He's an extraordinary teacher, it was well worth the trip.

One thing that I learned from these 40-minute quick studies on a mid-toned board is to paint the light. The form emerges and the shadow is suggested without having to paint it:)

Something different! Drawing of Asia

I don't know what to say about this, except that I felt like trying something different, and it worked:)

More drawings of Asia (Winter 2019)

This past winter, artist David Fox offered a life drawing class in Chappaqua. It's so good to be able to draw from a model, locally. Thank you, NWAG!

These are some more drawings of Asia, one of our favorite models. I really like the one above, where I slowed down, and just used compressed charcoal and one accent color.

Drawing with the left (non-dominant) hand

I'm right-handed, but sometimes, I do more expressive drawings with my left hand. I don't know why, but I really like this one:)

Drawing from the Model: 'Sandra' (Winter 2019)

This past winter, artist David Fox offered a life drawing class in Chappaqua. This was my favorite drawing of a lovely model named Sandra.

Foreshortened poses are usually tough ... this one worked.

Drawing on grey/blue hahnemuhle paper

Martin Campos is an extraordinary figurative artist that I follow on Instagram and Facebook. Check out his work: https://www.arceniomartincampos.com.

His drawings on toned paper inspired the series above. Gray/blue hahnemuhle paper is a nice contrast to warm skin tones. I like the first drawing, went overboard on the others.  Still, it was fun!
